Effective Boards
".. So what do we mean when we say we would like firms to have ‘effective boards’? Why are we are so interested? Because good governance increases the probability that good decisions will be made and because poor governance is a strong lead indicator of more significant problems.”
Hector Sants CEO of the FSA, on governance:

Do you need to think about building Board effectiveness?
Board effectiveness can often be found to be lacking in the following areas:
- The effectiveness of the Board (group performance, committees. relationships with stakeholders)
- The role of Chairman
- How the Board spends its time
- Strategy and performance objectives
- Decision making and suitable challenge on issues
- Understanding of FRC and listed company requirements and concerns
- The role, responsibilities, suitability and contributions of Board members
- Board member support and ongoing development
- Board composition and diversity
- Information flows and presentations, including reporting to shareholders and stakeholders
In addition to the scrutiny of regulators and shareholders being ever more intense, it is in each business's interests to have the most effective Board and therefore positively affect the bottom-line. Once a Board is aligned to the need to change and enhance its effectiveness real progress can be made. We work with forms to develop tailored programmes for Boards to develop by:
- Analysing the current situation
- Reporting on our findings and conclusions
- Providing recommendations for the development of the Board as individuals, a team and through enhanced Board processes
- Delivering a workable Action Plan
- Facilitating the Action Plan
- Providing regular follow-up
